#PutYourPhoneDownAnd …

Today on Twitter a trending hashtag was: #PutYourPhoneDownAnd.  Firstly, lets take a moment to realize that most of the Twitter users who are using that hashtag are probably posting that tweet from their phones.  Secondly, I found on under that hashtag a tweet from an executive of Sales Force saying: #PutYourPhoneDownAnd Be Present. I found this to be… inaccurate.  We live in a world where social media rules our lives.  A world where we are on our phones 24/7.  If you look around you on your next drive, you will see that most passengers are on a phone (and even some drivers).

To some people we all should put our phones down and be more “in the moment”.  But to others, taking a photo of the moment is being there.  In 2017, your phone is your life.  It’s the extension of who we are.  Not only that but your social media pages and posts are the platform that you essentially tell the world who you are.

Social media is called that for a reason.  Our social culture has evolved to be in the palm of our hand.  Everything happens from “the remote control of our lives”. EVERYTHING.  Technology isn’t changing who we are as people.  It’s connecting us more than ever.  If you do not follow Gary Vaynerchuk (on social media or YouTube or podcast or blog) you are missing a lot of advice and insight as a business owner and human.

Now, let’s bring this back to accounting.

Everything is in the palm of your hand on your phone.  Why not have your business numbers there too?  Business owners who are tethered to a desktop computer doing their own accounting are wasting their time.  All business owners should be out creating and selling whatever their product is.  By using Xero, HubDoc, and other apps that connect and push data to each other and to phones, our clients are able to focus only on making money.
